Two not-so-human teenagers and a friendly ghost radish face the fantasy adventure of a lifetime in this captivating graphic novel, featuring exclusive behind-the-scenes material, from the inimitable Katie Cook.
In the grand scheme of the worlds at large, Callie thinks she’s nothing special. Sure, she’s friends with the ghost of a radish and her dad owns a magical antique shop–but she’s spent her life in the human world. Her dad won’t let her join him on his collection trips in the magical realm “for her own protection”, so she’s only caught glimpses of that world through the gates of the town where her father’s store is.
On her seventeenth birthday, Callie goes home with her friend Declan to find her home in disarray and her dad missing. Signs of a struggle point to the portal to the magical realm and when there are signs, you follow them. Now it’s up to Callie, Declan, and Radish to band together and bring him home. As they face creatures good and bad, and all sorts of adventure, Callie and Declan may just find out that they are both special in their own ways after all.
The first season of mayhem, magic, vegetables and adventure from Katie Cook’s beloved Webtoon, Nothing Special , is collected in this gorgeous graphic novel, which also features exclusive behind-the-scenes content.

Let me tell you, I was not feeling well when I read the first chapter. Mainly because my phone couldn’t display the pdf properly. But today, I just picked it up and oh god, I was just so invested. Like glued to it. Haha.
So, I am so conflicted about whether to give spoilers. Let me tell you, there is a ghost radish, yes, ghost radish, and I feel like saying aww whenever I see the radish. Then there are the main characters. Callie is really awesome. I like her because she is firm in her beliefs. And Declan is just so in love with her. Just reading and watching the illustrations is simply awesome.
Callie can see plant spirits, and let me tell you, I find this amazing. I mean, I have never read books about that particular ghosts so I just loved it. As she goes on an adventure to find her father, she meets Lasser, the demon who has 87 brothers. Now that’s really not good, for Lasser. But for me, as a reader, he was delightful. His bickering with Declan was just to my liking. Poor Lasser, he doesn’t know comics and movies but I’m sure he will love them all later.
And the parts where Declan and Callie find out about her specialty and his powers, that was really cool.
I really want to share those pictures because the illustrations are mindblowing but you guys have to read it and see it to enjoy.
The villain, well, that ended well. I don’t know if the villain will resurface again in the future volumes. But the ending chapter is just so cute. And it ended well.
I guess that was spoiler-free.
A fantasy-filled adventure that will make you fall in love with the characters. Just read it so we can talk all about it.
And if you want to see the ghost radish, there is a cameo in the upcoming reel.
Nothing Special, Vol. 1: Through the Elder Woods by Katie CookMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
I felt that it was my kinda book, because really, there’s magic, mystery, a cute couple, and from now on, a radish. I never thought I would love a radish so much as a character. Callie and Declan, I just loved seeing them. The scenes were mostly funny, and charming too. The story, well, was very unexpected for me, and I liked it. I have to say, I am so happy that it is just the first volume. Because I definitely want to read more.
The best thing about this comic for me was the humor and the drawings. On point. I was smiling to the end. Adorable characters with even awesome illustrations, totally amazing. There is a funny demon in this adventure too, and I liked all the montages.
Just amazing!
