The Tournament of Heirs ( The Mexica Chronicles #1 ) by Amilea Perez- A Review
Bloodshed is coming
It’s simple.
Six Houses
Twelve Heirs
Only Two Blood Bound tributes can win and bring home victory.
Acalan has a duty to the empire he will inherit, and his sister Metztli has to make sure she keeps Acalan alive long enough to see his rule come to fruition. Together, both siblings must compete in the Tournament and win, but nothing in the empire is quite as it seems, and destiny has plans of its own.
Only one thing is certain for the two heirs of the House of Life.
Sacrifices must be made.
Genres: FANTASY ROMANCE MYTHOLOGY ROMANTASY FICTION
REVIEW:
First, back after so long. Hope you all are doing fine.
Second, I normally don’t read books with tournaments. Can you guess why? Obviously when you start liking a character, that character dies. I know it happens in all books be it romance or fantasy, but still its definitely going to hurt. But yeah, its fine. I can say, I haven’t read many books after Divergent series on this theme.
But I liked the story from the second chapter. I liked to read about Acalan and Metztli, a brother-sister duo. It was really nice to see their relationship. I liked how they cared for each other and also hurt each other because of love. I had a feeling that Acalan was going to do something. And he did, in an unexpected way.
That aside, there are houses and these houses compete in the tournament. And Acalan finds out about this prophecy and honestly, it was all building up for the end. Metztli was the prophesied heir. She did shoulder it great in the end.
Now, for spoilers. If you don’t want to know, please don’t click. But if you are someone like me with curiosity, you will click, I know!

Are you sure?
Acalan dies. Yes, I didn’t like it but I could understand. But I’m really interested in waht could be as Citlalic saw a future where Acalan and Metztli won. So, Im really hoping that he could be back in the next books. Citlalic is Acalan’s love interest and the sister of Heirs of House of Blood.
The other thing is that there is a dog in the pyramid and Metztli names the dog Xuki. And I really feel that there should be some connection here with the god of lightning who was missing before the war. Even if it’s not, I would like to know more.
Another thing I liked was how it went from knowing to living about the tournament in terms of mentality for the characters. I like when the author talks about grief and friendship. Makes it understandable as to what the character is feeling.
Yeah, I felt really curious while reading so I can say I enjoyed the book. The romance didn’t bother me because I was in for the fantasy element. If you want to read something with a heavy tone but a good immersive story, try this book.

The plot was good. The ending was great considering everything like the twists was building up to it. I liked how the mental journey of the characters was described, like the two sides of a coin. There were times I hated each character and then I liked them.
It was a good read considering, I was really invested in how it would end. Now, I’m really interested in seeing what happens next.
Hoping for a really loved character to come back though!
