Memories, Magic and Mayhem by K. Starling – A Review

Since Penelope Sedgewick felt such arbitrary societal expectations were rubbish, she became a sleuth. When not avoiding dances or calls by tiresome would-be suitors, she investigates delicate matters for ladies—love nests, stolen jewels, missing husbands who may or may not have been eaten by dragons—the usual.

When a lady from another time falls dead at her feet, she plunges headlong into the past (quite literally) to unravel a mystery thirty years in the making. Penelope’s skills will be put to the test as she wrestles with ghosts from her future, tiresome rakes, and even Fate, all while concealing her magical abilities.

Will she be able to prevent the girl’s death without altering history? Or will she inadvertently step on one too many butterflies, harming her family forever?

Memories, Magic, and Mayhem is the second novel in the Alderwood Regency Fantasies—a series of cozy fantasies set in a reimagined Regency England filled with dragons, magic, and intrigue.

Review

First, let’s talk about the cover! Isn’t it beautiful?
Next, the writing, it’s just awesome. I loved reading the book. It starts in a good way, I admit I didn’t read the first book, but I feel like I knew the characters while reading it. The pace of the plot is not fast and not too slow, you can keep up with it and understand the mechanism of the world the book is set in.
There’s magic, and it’s set in the 1800s, so it’s remarkable, actually. Our protagonist Penelope is a detective. She really solves mysteries.
That brings me to the characters, I loved them all. They are just cute. There’s a dragon too!
That aside, when the mystery was brought into the play, it was wow. I was thrilled and I couldn’t guess who the real mastermind was. The time travel and all the details, the magical charms, they all add up to a perfectly amazing climax. In the end, I was shook. It was that awesome and again, I seem not to be able to stress enough, it was awesome.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is just so awesome. The writing, it’s just written so well that I wanted the book to not end. And the characters, they are adorable. I just loved the whole reading experience, the book world is immersive, the mystery keeps you on edge, and the Narrator’s notes are delightful.
I feel like I don’t want the series to end, I want to read more and more. My favorite book of the year, for sure!
