Difficult Girls by Veronica Bane- A Review

A teen girl’s attempt at social reinvention takes a deadly turn when a co-worker disappears—and she learns she may have been the last person to see the missing girl—in this razor-sharp, murderously funny thriller debut.

After the incident last year, Greta Riley Green is looking for reinvention—a fresh start—and a job at Hyper Kid Magic Land, the local amusement park, seems like the perfect way to forge a new path . . . no matter what it takes.

So when fate pulls Greta into Mercy Goodwin’s orbit, it feels like things are looking up. Beautiful and confident, Mercy dazzles audiences daily. And at the first party of the summer, she picks Greta to confide in. Mercy has a secret to share, if Greta will just meet her the next day. It’s a sign that Greta’s truly fitting in.

Only, when the time comes, Mercy is a no-show—as she is everyday after that—and Greta knows something’s wrong. She can’t help thinking back to the night of the party. Did Mercy seem upset? Terrified, even? Could she be in trouble? It wouldn’t be the first time a talented young performer came to a sinister end at Hyper Kid. . . .

Of course, Greta has her own issues with the past, and the more she uncovers Hyper Kid’s secrets, the more her own threaten to surface. This job was meant to be a reboot, a summer without trouble. But trouble, it seems, finds Greta, and her past—and the bloody past of Hyper Kid—is about to catch up with her.

Review:

Now, this was intense. It started great, and by the time I was done with chapter one, I was already worrying. For Greta and for the unknown person who was going to be targeted. But the process of reading and getting to know other characters made me forget that, and then there it was, the crime.

Greta is lovely, I liked her very much. And again, I liked her friends too. The ones she made at Hyper Kid. The banter and everything, it was a good reading experience. Especially Liam and Ivy, I loved them. There were so many moments I loved in the book. Like how I learned what Greta did, I have to say, I had a reaction to Liam, and I was worried if she was actually wrong in the matter, when it was all an accident. She frightened me for a large part of the book.

And maybe because, for once, I was following the book pretty well, I figured out the person, and I’m not saying I was entirely right about the end, but I was on the right path. It’s not easy because at one point, I was thinking it could be anyone. Any character. It’s really written well, and the ending came at the right time.
Overall, a totally pleasant book that makes you want to just keep reading and reading.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I liked this book and I have to say, Greta had me scared about her past and Liam had the same reaction as me when we found out. It is really entertaining in a way when I read and uncovered the mystery. And for the first time, I predicted the antagonist. The first half had me going in a wrong direction but the second half was a quick one and gripping.
And I loved Ivy and Liam. The characters are written really well. I did not see the ending coming though.
